Meet our friends: Main Sauvage

We’ve got a lot of love for Main Sauvage here at ToyDropMaybe it’s their shared concern for the well-being of children and the environment. Maybe it’s their fairer-than-Fairtrade manufacturing process that offers good working conditions and a proper income to craftswomen in Bolivia who can neither read nor write. Maybe it’s that their range of super soft and instantly-recognisable toys are SO DAMN BEAUTIFUL (I mean, who are we kidding, it’s obviously all three).

Founded in 2015 by two young architects, Cécile Pinoteau and Julien Gippet, their designs are inspired by the odd and unexpected nature of everyday life. But this attention to detail is just the beginning…

Each gorgeous handmade toy is knitted from luxurious baby alpaca wool sourced from a spinning mill in the Bolivian Andes by small, local breeders. The colours of this wonderfully eco-conscious material are kept natural where possible or dyed with non-toxic inks where necessary, then stuffed with recycled plastic bottle fibres for another tick in the eco box.

Unlike sheep’s wool, which contains lanolin, alpaca is hypoallergenic, antibacterial, super durable and water repellent so it’ll stay cleaner for longer in grubby little hands. Of course, everything complies with European toy safety standards too.

But if one thing really stands out, then for us it’s the partnership they have with the French Secours Populaire. This charity provides material and moral support to families suffering from poverty, social exclusion, armed conflicts and natural disasters, both in France and abroad. Inevitably, Main Sauvage produce a number of soft toys with small aesthetic defects that mean they can’t be sold. They’re not ugly or dangerous, they just look a little quirky and like every toy, need the love of a child. These little characters are put aside for families in need, helping to tackle developmental problems and build the creative expression that comes from open-ended play.

If you’re looking for a beautiful and thoughtful gift for a baby that won’t just be loved forever, but will teach them their first lesson in conscious consumption, look no further. They’re our go-to newborn gift for good reason.
