Meet our Friends: Lauvely

4th October 2019

Words by Anna Whitaker

I mean, who needs words when the toys look this good (as a writer, you may need to humour me) but these bad boys are something else, right?!

Lauvely is a brand that has clearly been thought through. Beautiful designs, considered collections and ethical craftsmanship are just a few of the amazing qualities its been built on and I couldn’t be more obsessed.

It was founded by Laura Cima in Gijón, a small town in the north of Spain surrounded by rolling green scenery, rugged clifftops and wild, natural beaches. No wonder then that her designs are inspired by fairytales, travel and the kids she meets along the way. In fact, one of the very first Lauvely dolls was made for (and named after) her friend’s daughter, who she’d fobbed off with a self-confessed ‘random’ toy when she was born and felt compelled to replace when she could.

And that was it. A sudden change in direction after 10 years’ as a graphic designer in advertising, meant that instead of designing for corporate clients, she could now design for the best customers in the world; children (the dream, right?). Today she spends her days creating new friends by hand, knitting, sewing and embroidering each one at home in her studio.

All the toys of the Lauvely Friends collection are made with 100% lambswool, filled with OEKO-TEX certified non-toxic 100% polyester, and delicately embroidered one-by-one, making each toy full of personality and ready to be treasured for a lifetime.

Take the circus collection, for example. This was the first to catch my eye a couple of years ago and I still can’t pick a favourite. The ballerinas and mermaids are timeless and the latest collection of cyclist dolls might have pipped them all to the post for me, in this world where dolls for boys are still so rare.

Whichever one you decide on (or bookmark for the next baby in your life), I can feel pretty certain they’ll love it for a lifetime. But if I have one piece of advice for anyone buying lambswool in a house as moth-infested as mine, it’s worth giving it a spritz of lavender once in a while. You won’t regret it.
