Meet our Friends: Eperfa

30th June 2020

There are some sustainable toy brands that simply take your breath away. Eperfa is one of them. Based in the hills around Budapest and the ever-changing Lake Balaton, you can almost taste the simple life as you run your hands over these beautifully designed, thoughtfully made wooden toys.

Sustainable wooden toys

Each of the traditional yet modern sets are dedicated to the natural slowness of childhood, where kids can explore freely and take their time to observe, inspiring creativity and imagination with the open-ended possibilities of play.

The team also works with a handful of experts from some of Hungary’s leading nature reserves and organisations, including Birdlife Hungary, the Hungarian Natural History Museum and Balaton Uplands National Park. This helps them to expand their knowledge about the world around them and add the attention to detail that makes each toy feel as authentic as it is loveable.

Like most sustainable toy brands, Eperfa makes its products with environmental and social factors at its core. 95% of its wood is sourced directly from the foresters at Duna-Ipoly Nemzeti Park, who take care of the land there and make sure the ecosystem is able to thrive.

The toys are then handmade by individual craftsmen in small workshops around Budapest. These independent producers employ a high proportion of disabled and socially underprivileged workers, who are paid a fair wage and benefits that focus on their overall wellbeing and a balanced workload. Yes, this pushes their prices up a little, but it’s reassuring to know how much thought has gone into each toy and the clear conscience you can get buying into them.

From ToyDrop’s perspective, the range is a beautiful dedication to nature and would be the perfect gift for a new baby to put on display in their nursery. The stacking creatures will come into their own around 18 months to two years, when children are starting to experiment with balance. The birds, fish, trees and houses all make wonderful accessories to imaginary play scapes, which will last way into their primary school years.

I’d love to know if you have any ways you play with these sorts of toys at home. Please leave your comments below and I’ll be sure to include them in an imaginary play roundup soon.

Eperfa toys are available from Moon Picnic and Conscious Craft here in the UK, as well as their own website, which ships to the UK from Hungary for €16 (or free if you spend more than €80). You’ll find a few extra treats when you visit their own site too, from gorgeous leather belt bags to nursery accessories. Happy shopping.

Love it? Share it.
